The American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine (AFRP) joins the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis led with humility, compassion, and an unwavering love for all people. He was a true champion of the marginalized and displaced, using the teachings of Christ to urge global compassion and empathy for migrants and refugees, victims of injustice, the sick and elderly, and the poor.
Pope Francis was also a courageous and outspoken advocate for peace. He consistently raised his voice against injustice and violence, most notably condemning Israel’s destructive
military campaign in Gaza. His Holiness was deeply disturbed by the deplorable humanitarian situation in the region and persistently called for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid. In an extraordinary show of solidarity, Pope Francis made personal, daily calls to priests and Christian leaders in Gaza, offering prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support. These calls were more than symbolic gestures—they were lifelines of hope and strength for a community enduring immense hardship. Through these heartfelt conversations, he ensured that the Christian presence in Gaza was not forgotten, demonstrating his deep respect and concern for the well-being of Gaza’s indigenous Christian population. He recognized their unique and ancient role in the Holy Land and valued their resilience and steadfast faith amidst adversity.
Moreover, Pope Francis never failed to show compassion and concern for all Palestinians, regardless of faith. He extended his prayers and solidarity to the entire population of Gaza, including the Muslim community, acknowledging the suffering and loss they endure. His calls for peace, protection of civilians, and an end to violence reflected his belief in the dignity and sacredness of all human life.
As the largest Christian Palestinian community in the diaspora, and as descendants of the first Christians whose roots trace back to the very land where Christ walked, the people of Ramallah carry a profound connection to the history and faith that Pope Francis so deeply honored. His recognition and defense of our presence and identity as indigenous Christians in the Holy Land will forever remain a testament to his moral courage and spiritual leadership.
We are forever grateful for Pope Francis’ steadfast support and compassion for the Palestinian people. His tireless advocacy for peace, justice, and human dignity has left an indelible mark on our hearts and on the world. We pray that his vision of peace—one rooted in love, dignity, and mutual respect—will one day come to fruition. We join the rest of the world in prayer for His Holiness Pope Francis. May he rest in peace under the eternal glory of God.
